South Aussies Kicking Bad Habits This Month!

scosa is calling on South Australians to kick their bad habits while at the same time helping to support people living with disabilities as part of its new Kick it healthy living campaign.

GetImagescosa is calling on South Australians to kick their bad habits while at the same time helping to support people living with disabilities as part of its new Kick it healthy living campaign.

The culmination of the campaign will be a walk through the streets of Adelaide at 10.00am on  Sunday 26 October 2014 from Elder Park, finishing in Victoria Square, where participants will celebrate the bad habits that they have kicked. Victoria Square will be alive with food trucks, games, live music, a Port Adelaide handball competition and even places where participants can get their cholesterol levels checked and skin examined for dangerous spots as part of promoting a healthier lifestyle.

John Tobin, General Manager, Fundraising for scosa commented, “The unique aspect of Kick it is that people choose to do whatever they like – whether it be kicking a bad habit or doing something good for themselves. They can choose to commit for as little as a couple of weeks, while for some who are really keen it may be that they want to make a permanent change, such as giving up smoking or starting regular exercise. I also know some people who aren’t making any lifestyle changes but they are keen to support South Australians with disabilities so they are simply doing the 2.5 km walk.”

A number of workplaces and schools have embraced the challenge of Kick it. Mr Tobin added, “We see it as an opportunity for people of all ages to get involved. For instance kids might like to try the challenge of spending no more than one hour on their iPads each day or committing to eating fruit and vegetables every day. For anyone who drives a car they may want to kick for good the dangerous habit of texting while driving.

We are really pleased that a number of scosa clients are also getting involved, with one young man from Elizabeth Park determined to fight his sweet tooth by giving up processed sugar for the month of October. We were also recently advised that a woman recently challenged her husband to shave off his beard as she has never seen him without it, and already they have raised almost $2,000 from friends and family who are keen to see his new look!”

The funds raised will help scosa to support more South Australians living with disabilities, while also enabling the not for profit organisation to provide a wider range of tailored programs to enable each person at scosa to maximise their independence and potential.
