First Look At Jamie Oliver’s New Adelaide Restaurant

Today makes the opening of the long-awaited and much-anticipated Jamie Oliver restaurant in Adelaide and we’ve got some insight into what you can expect!

Today makes the opening of the long-awaited and much-anticipated Jamie Oliver restaurant in Adelaide – Jamie’s Italian Australia. The opening date was the worst-kept secret in town, but those involved were tight lipped about the details and it wasn’t until last night’s soft launch that we finally got to see inside the venue and could confirm that the public will be able to dine there from today.

Guests at last night’s event were warmly greeted, and while not everyone’s tables were ready, guests were able to have a drink at the bar and taken in the atmosphere. Adelaide Hills boutique beer label Prancing Pony is on tap so Jamie got extra points right off the bat.

Although officially a ‘training night’, the confidence of the staff was pleasantly surprising and they were well equipped to handle the services with a calming presence. Guests enjoyed watching the Executive Chef David Clarke quality controlling, tasting sauces and sending back plates that didn’t meet his high standard, all adding to the theatre of the experience.

Jamie’s Italian Australia restaurant was busy, vibrant and energetic – all points you’d expect from Adelaide’s latest talking point.

The menu was extensive, including share plates and generous antipasto boards, which were very affordable at under $20pp.

Derek Butler and his guests at last night’s sneak peek dinner

Our insider, Derek from Black Squid Design, enjoyed the Sausage Pappardelle as his entree, which he was was unbelievable and incredibly authentic, drawing similiarities to his Italian friends home made traditional pork and fennel pasta.

For mains, Derek went with the Squid Ink Angel Hair Pasta (as one does when their company is called Black Squid), complete with scallops and anchovies – another winner. The pasta was cooked al dente, with bucket loads of flavour.

Other meals ordered included the ‘plank’ of cold meats and cheeses, which was explained in great detail by the staff while seated next to the diners at eye level.

The Truffle Risotto was also of exceptional quality.

The Fettuccine Vongole was a little light on with the Vongole, but overall the food lived up to expectations and there was a definite pasta focus for all you carb lovers!

The wine list was a little disappointing, only serving Italian wines, which does fit with the venue, however South Australia does have some exceptional brands offering Italian varietals which could have been included. In a town so familiar (and comfortable) with our much loved wineries, it may take some diners out of their comfort zone. A good sommelier who can guide the wine drinkers to a great experience is all that is needed here.

The decor was warm and comfortable with lots of timber and different styles of seating options, including circular booths and couch seating around the perimeter. The restaurant has packed in as many tables as possible, which makes things a little ‘cosy’ however with high demand expected, you can see why they’ve done it.

Derek mentions that the toilets are a ‘must see’ however he’s keeping that secret to himself, so we’ll just have to go and check them out!

And for all you fans out there, Jamie Oliver merchandise is all for sale.

Jamie’s Italian is a must go restaurant of Adelaide. You’ll find it at the corner of North Terrace and King William Road and they’re open for lunches and dinner.
