Silence! Frewville Foodland To Host ‘Quiet Hour Shopping’ This Tuesday

This Tuesday evening the lights will be dimmed, noise and strong smells reduced to a minimum as Frewville Foodland implement the first ever ‘Quiet Hour Shopping’.

Imagine for a moment that you were so overcome by lights, sounds, smells and activity that living a normal life was simply not possible. In some ways, we can all relate to that feeling, especially in the middle of a busy supermarket during the after work rush. But for some living with a disability, this is a daily reality.

So the Best Supermarket In The World (yep, that’s their official title) at Foodland Frewville are partnering with the team from Cara to pioneer “Quiet Hour Shopping”, a more sensory friendly shopping experience starting this Tuesday night from 6:30-7:30pm.

The lights will be dimmed, music and pager messages switched off, volume of the “beeps” on the check-outs lowered, there will be no coffee grinding and strong smells will be reduced where possible. Cara Specialist Services staff have spent time training Foodland staff in the subtleties of creating this new atmosphere, while Cara staff will also be on site with information and sensory toys for anyone who would like to borrow one.

The idea is to not only raise awareness of Cara Specialty Services and highlight the life experience of some of the people they work with who experience sensory overload, but generally speaking this simply sounds like a wonderful idea to appreciate a moment of quiet amongst their day.

Of course, this also seems like the ideal opportunity for a loud temper tantrum in the aisle from a particularly tired toddler, but perhaps in fact the atmosphere will put them at ease? Who knows.

Take part in Quiet Hours at Frewville Foodland on 177 Glen Osmond Rd, on Tuesdays from 6.30pm to 7.30pm on, July 12, July 19, July 26 and August 2
