I have seen some unusual angles for a romantic film, but love blossoming in a pool is a new one for me!
The Together Project is a refreshing take on a romantic film that has some unusual developments before a satisfying ending.
Samir, a tall, 40-plus crane operator from Montreuil, in the outskirts of Paris, falls head over heels in love with Agathe, a fiery young woman he spots in a café. He discovers she is a swimming instructor at the local public swimming pool, and, with a bit of conniving, enlists as her student.
Unbeknownst to Agathe, he can swim perfectly but his deception only lasts for three lessons then the truth surfaces. Agathe is furious, and leaves for a swimming pool conference in Iceland. Samir follows, posing as a delegate, convinced he can win her over.
What happens next would spoil the rest of the film for you, but I can assure you there are many obstacles in the way of true love.
Any romantic film depends heavily on its two stars and The Together Project does not disappoint. Samir Guesmi and Florence Loiret Caille play their roles perfectly. Guesmi is the ideal lovesick puppy who would do anything to get the woman of his dreams. His innocence and naivety are never over played, making him a totally believable character.
Loiret Caille plays Agathe as a modern woman, secure in herself and initially resistant to Samir’s advances. In the course of the film her character develops, softens. Once again she emerges as a well-rounded individual.
Add to the leading actors a supporting cast full of quirky characters and you have a film that will keep you entertained right to the end.
My only criticism was the pace of the film. It slowed in a few sections which did not aid the development of the story.
If you enjoy a good romance, an unusual plot and the starkness of the Icelandic landscape then The Together Project is for you!
