Sazón Hits The CBD With Mexican Flavours

When a new cafe opens up, we feel obliged to check it out. We want to tell you all about Sazón, a little taste of Latin America in our very own city…

Mt Barker’s best-kept secret has landed in Adelaide’s CBD and word is already flying around fast.

Sazón Espresso opened its doors in Grenfell Street on Monday, after a yearlong saga. Bringing their delicious South American flavours to the city, we couldn’t wait to get there and try it! Here at Glam we love new cafes, good food and good coffee (as you have probably noticed), and Sazón ticks all the right boxes.

Originally hailing from Mexico, owners Oswaldo and Jose Estralla have been widely hailed as the best coffee makers in Mt Barker since 2009.

Tucked away, down the side of the colloquially named, ‘Black Stump’ on Grenfell Street we fought the temptation of stopping at the Red Door Bakery’s newest storefront to get to the incredibly trendy interior of Sazón.

Lit with stage lighting, the open space manages to feel both industrial and inviting, a welcome change to the recent spate of vintage interiors in Adelaide cafes. The feature piece of the room is the large bench seat through the middle, featuring a glass cutout filled with lit-up sugar skulls, to bring a little taste of Latin-America to the room.

Hitting up Sazón for breakfast seemed like the best option for a cold Tuesday morning, and boy, were we right.

Throwing ourselves wholeheartedly into the Mexican breakfast experience, the number one choice on the menu was the Huveos Rancheros. The resulting mouthgasm from this blend of scrambled eggs, San Jose chorizo, with pico de gallo was incredibly worth skipping the usual pastry and black coffee for. As an added bonus, the vegetable content in the pico de gallo makes up for the rest of the weeks Farmers Unions.

I, personally went for the Eggs and Hollandiase, drawn in by the promise of poached eggs with a dill and lemon hollandaise sauce. Not having been a fan of hollandaise up until recently, this was an odd choice for me, but turned out to be the right one. I’ve never considered adding dill to many things, as I’m not a huge fan, but I was wrong… so, so wrong. The dill added just the extra burst of complex flavour needed to turn a plain dish into a masterpiece.

Coffee runs through our blood here at Glam, and obviously no review would be complete without mention of the coffee and whether it’s worth a second go. Given that there were multiple coffees consumed per person this morning, we would say that’s a yes. Sazón use Veneziano beans, a favourite amongst coffee lovers, and churned out perfect coffee after perfect coffee.

Sazón is already drawing quite the crowd, so we suggest getting in there soon! Their city store is open Monday through Thursday from 7am until 4pm, and open until late on Fridays for dinner service.
