SALA Exhibit ‘Vanaema’ Spans Generations

Final year law student, Michal Kedem is presenting Vanaema, an exhibition curated by herself and showcasing the work of her 83 year old grandmother.

Final year law student, Michal Kedem is presenting ‘Vanaema’, an exhibition curated by herself and showcasing the work of her 83 year old grandmother.

The exhibit is titled ‘Vanaema’, which is grandmother in Estonian, and displays the abstract works that Kedem’s grandmother creates.

Helve Aisatullin, Kedem’s grandmother, is a post-war Soviet Estonian refugee who settled in South Australia in 1947.

Aisatullin creates her art on a variety of different mediums, cabinet doors, tiles, cardboard, plaster board, anything firm enough to paint on is splashed with expression.

Kedem says that her grandmother, “paints because she loves it. She has loved it since she was a little girl in Estonia when she drew with coloured pencils.  She loved how the colours sat together and still does.”
