SA Restaurants Win Big At Good Food Guide Awards

The National Good Food Guide Awards were held last night and the mighty South Aussies smashed it once again with ten SA restaurants being included in the revered guide.

The National Good Food Guide Awards were held last night marking the official launch of the first national Good Food Guide, and the mighty South Aussies smashed it once again with ten SA restaurants being included in the revered guide.

With SA restaurants including regular award-winner Restaurant Orana who grabbed two hats, as well as the forage-focussed Hentley Farm and the foothills-located Magill Estate Restaurant who also received two hats each, we couldn’t be more proud. Beloved North African eatery, Africola, and Leigh St’s Shobosho also nabbed a hat each.

The highly respected ‘hat’ award system remains since the previously city-specific restaurant guide became national, now showcasing the best restaurants in a suite of categories, from Hobart to Darwin, Brisbane to Perth.

Adelaide’s Restaurant Orana was not only awarded two hats, but also won the Food for Good award for setting up The Orana Foundation. The restaurant is celebrated for its innovation, charity and sustainability, and for going above and beyond to contribute to the broader community. Restaurant Orana chef Jock Zonfrillo expanded the discoveries of his Adelaide venue into a foundation that preserves the food heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and integrates native foods into the broader culinary culture. Most importantly, Zonfrillo strives to ensure any benefits of a new native produce industry are returned to Indigenous communities.

Nikki Friedli from Adelaide’s Africola was awarded the top service gong, for executing the highest standard of restaurant service, from attitude and skill to knowledge and personality. The 26-year-old restaurant manager is renowned for reading an audience – from slinging mescal shots to party-keen locals to introducing first-time diners to the bold flavours of South Africa at the Adelaide restaurant.
Summertown Aristologist’s (SA) won Regional Wine List of the Year – and was honoured for complementing the restaurant’s food and style, while also reflecting the unique qualities of the region courtesy of winemakers and venue co-owners Jasper Button (Commune of Buttons) and Anton van Klopper, along with Aaron Fenwick.

After 38 years as a city-by-city restaurant guide, the 2018 Good Food Guide is now a single, national edition covering 500 restaurants around Australia. Formerly published individually by The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Brisbane Times, and considered Australia’s most trusted guides, this 2018 edition has been researched and compiled by a team of respected critics, and co-edited by Roslyn Grundy and Myffy Rigby.
