SA Business’ Supporting Kids Breakfast Initiative, You Can Too

Kickstart For Kids are helping to ensure no child goes without breakfast in SA, and local business are throwing their weight behind it.

More than 500 business leaders across Adelaide will get nothing but food for thought when they support Kickstart for Kids’ (KSFK) annual ‘No Breakfast Breakfast’ at the Hilton Adelaide on Friday November 25, 2016.

That’s when, tummies rumbling and paying $50 per head or $450 for a table of 10 for the privilege, the sole course will see experts in leadership development, Leading Teams, chatting with Aussie cricket coach and local man Darren ‘Boof’ Lehmann about building a winning culture.

Prominent South Australian company OTR has joined forces with KSFK for the 2016 ‘No Breakfast Breakfast’, which also has the support of media partner, Mix 102.3.

Immediately following the event, the hungry executives will spill out onto neighbouring Victoria Square for an OTR-hosted public celebration where about 300 schoolchildren will gather to enjoy a morning of festivities with Jodie and Soda from Mix 102.3.

It’s also where the executives get the chance to conquer their hunger by buying a bacon and egg roll prepared by the team of chefs at the Hilton Adelaide and served by hotel staff.

A not-for-profit initiative started by current CEO Ian Steel seven years ago, KSFK programs include serving about 40,000 breakfasts to young disadvantaged South Australian students each week in an effort to ensure that no child goes to school hungry.

“In a small way, our ‘No Breakfast Breakfast’ gives busy executives the chance to experience what it feels like to go to work on an empty stomach and expect to perform at their peak – and to support a great cause,” Mr Steel said.

It is estimated that 15 per cent of all primary school children in the state go to school each day without having eaten breakfast and with no packed lunch in their school bags. KSFK provides these meals to children without any government funding or assistance.

“Thankfully, we have more than 500 volunteers that serve the meals, make the sandwiches and mentor they children – and now we have a generous new supporter in OTR,” Mr Steel said.

“And as it costs just $1,200 to run our program in a school for 12 months, the generosity of OTR and the business executives at this breakfast goes a long way to helping us to not only continue our programs but expand them to the point where we realise our dream that no child goes to school hungry.”

OTR Chief Customer Officer, Michaela Webster added that as a proudly South Australian corporation employing over 2,500 people with more than 130 stores, the company was equally proud to join forces with and support KSFK.

“Ian and his team do such a tremendous and selfless job making a difference to the lives of so many underprivileged children at some 300 schools across South Australia and we’re thrilled to be able to play a part in KSFK’s current and future success,” said Michaela.
