The Royal South Australian Society of the Arts is Australia’s oldest arts society. That’s quite a sentence; We’ll just let that one sink in for a second.

The RSASA’s second Portrait Prize Exhbition will be held in June and has just announced that this year’s major prize will be a staggering amount of $10,000, donated by Irena Zhang.

Irena is the Owner of Zi Gallery and has had a long running passion for the arts. She has curated a variety of multicultural and community focused art exhibitions, internationally acclaimed dance and theatre performances. These have including Red Poppy, the Yalong Tibetan Song and Dance Troupe and the Guiyang Acrobatic Troupe.

Known to be a catalyst for fundraising activities and events for wider causes outside our local community, Irena has been involved in appeals such as Sichuan Earthquake Appeal, the Guangdong Flood Victims Appeal, The Premiers Olympic Games Appeal and the South East Asian Tsunami Appeal.

She had a passionate influence in a re-invigoration of the Chinatown district in Adelaide, spearheading a revamped Lunar New Year Event in February 2013 and 2014 which saw Gouger Street join with Moonta Street.

The Zhang family’s support of the Arts and the RSASA continues, by Irena’s generous gift of $10,000 to the second Royal South Australian Society Portrait Prize. It will be dedicated to her father Victor Zhang.

Three independent judges have been appointed and they will work with Irena’s father, well known international artist Victor Zhang, in the selection of the first prize of $10,000.

Mr. Zhang was a member of the RSASA and Irena has boldly followed in his footsteps showing a keen interest in the arts, in Australia and Asia. This generous support of the coming exhibition is incredible and so significant for South Australian art.

In addition to this generous support Mr Martin Haese, The Lord Mayor of the City of Adelaide has kindly agreed to open the second RSASA Biennial Portrait Prize Exhibition. This will take place on Sunday 28th June 2015 at 2pm at the RSASA Gallery.

The subsequent event will be held for four weeks (from 28th June until 26th July 2015) and will undoubtedly bring a rich diversity of work.

Information and entry forms for artists are now available at www.rsasarts.com.au

Entries close on Friday 8th May 2015.
