The Adelaide Fringe will return to Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga in 2015 with the Royal Croquet Club set to once again bring their unique brand of innovation and entertainment to the heart of the city.
A registration of interest process was opened up in June this year, allowing anyone with an interest in putting on an event in the Square during next year’s festival season to apply.
In 2014, the Royal Croquet Club was the only group who approached Council with an idea to activate the Square during the Fringe. The new registration of interest process gave anyone with an idea for a Fringe event in the Square in 2015 the opportunity to submit an idea.
Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood offered his congratulations to the organisers behind the Royal Croquet Club.
“Last year’s event was very popular and showcased the possibilities for the redeveloped Square.
“Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga is the community heart of the city and it’s important that it is a lively, people-focussed place and the Royal Croquet Club certainly achieved this. I look forward to seeing what they create in the Square in 2015.”
The registration of interest process required applicants to provide a venue concept that responded to both the Events Selection Criteria and Hirers’ Guidelines for Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga endorsed by Council earlier this year. The guidelines ensure the Square is visually attractive, well maintained, safe and accessible for the whole community during events.
The event proposals were reviewed and assessed against criteria such as whether the event fits with the Square’s identity, the event’s uniqueness and standard of innovation and excellence, suitability of the event to the site, how it would work with other venues in the city and opening hours.
A panel made up of staff from various programs across Council reviewed and assessed the applications received, and applied a selection criteria matrix against each application.
Royal Croquet Club’s application generated the highest score as their submission best addressed the selection criteria and provided appropriate information as to how a number of the hirers’ guidelines could be met.
“Unlike other areas of the city that are used during the Fringe such as the Park Lands, Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga is Council’s only programmed event space,” Vibrant City Program Manager Penny McAuley said.
“This means that event organisers must show that their event is in keeping with the unique identity of Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga. We want to support a variety of events and activities for the whole community to enjoy.”
The Royal Croquet Club in 2015 will feature performing arts, street theatre, interactive theatre, family friendly activities, music, live performances, themed food and beverage offerings, market stalls and of course, croquet.
