Wowza! The Thundamentals are rocking it right now. I mean c’mon – after taking out their highest chart position to date, debuting at number 2 on the ARIA charts with their 4th and most accomplished long-player ‘Everyone We Know’, plus already scoring a place in Triple J’s hottest 100 with ‘Think About It’ earlier this year, a sweet gig at triple J’s One Night Stand and joining the incredible line up of Groovin The Moo it’s no surprise that the ‘Everyone We Know’ official Australia & New Zealand album launch tour is the biggest they’ve ever announced. And we were hanging to hear it live and loud!
In what feels like a coming of age, recorded at the studio of good friends Hermitude in Sydney’s Inner West, ‘Everyone We Know’ is the band’s first album to be released on their own label ‘High Depth’ and in the words of Rolling Stone: “pushes their sound even further from their last genre-defying effort… cement[ing] them as a creative force to be reckoned with.” (4 stars)
Reputation’s like the one Thundamentals’ carry must be earned. Ten years and 4 albums deep into a career that has seen them relentlessly carve up venues across Australia and Europe whilst gracing almost every major music festival in the country along the way – the Blue Mountains via Sydney Hip Hop outfit are now heralded as one of Australia’s most exciting and powerful live acts.
The sold-out Adelaide leg of their national tour certainly had the room abuzz from start to finish. Killing it with a mix of songs off their old and new music solid tunes like, “Never Say Never”, “Everyone We Know” and “Deja Vu”.They also pulled out songs crowd favourites, “Smiles Don’t Lie” off their 2014 album So We Can Remember. Their energy on stage was infectious – the crowd was bopping and jumping along – throwing their hands in the ay-er like they just don’t cay-er.
It was awesome.
After the finale, the crowd went wild chanting “one more song” until the boys came back and delivered the goods. The knocked it out the park with “Something That I Said”. I don’t think there wasn’t a single person who wasn’t singing along.
My only gripe? The sound wasn’t the greatest at times. The volume levels seemed to fluctuate ever so slightly.
