Review: ‘The Gurge’ At The Gov! (Regurgitator)

reghuman2016loresThere was no better way to prepare the audience for ‘The Gurge’ than opening the show with Ghyte and Jeremy Neale. Both with their fun vibes coupled with side helpings of grunge and Electronica- they certainly hit the “amp me up” spot.

Local Adelaide support act Ghyte, with their fun and playful lyrics, brought a chilled out vibrancy to the stage. From Brisbane, Jeremy Neale kept the vibrancy coming with their Indie/ Electronica set. Charismatic front man Jeremy Neale was engaging with his theatrical antics. Mischievous and entertaining, Jeremy and his band brought the audience alive with their sound. Their energetic and alternative set was polished and uplifted the audience. A great set, check them out. Both bands humbly thanking Regurgitator, it was time for the lads to appear.

And appear they did! Bursting onto the stage like a freight train full of crazy, Regurgitator open with “I sucked a lot of c*** to get where I am” from their 1996 debut album, Tu Plang. Donning a pair of acid wash jeans and a blue flanny, the trip down memory lane begins! Announcing Adelaide as their last show on their Human Distribution tour, Ben Ely chats to the audience as if conversing with an old friend. Personalised performance- loved it! Playing old favourites like ‘Polyester Girl’, from their 1997 album ‘Unit’, ‘Blubber Boy- 1996 ‘Tu-Plang’ and ‘I wanna be a nudist’ -1999, ‘Art’- the boys prove they’ve still got the goods. Drawing their audience in with sing-a-longs, their playful on stage antics amplified by their outlandish costume choices, the Gurge epitomize the phrase “You’re only as old as you feel.”

A cheeky Ben Ely disenchantedly introduces their next song by asking his audience “you guys don’t want to her a white guy rap, do ya?” insinuating that past choices are sometimes regrettable, Fat Cop erupts like a sonic boom out of the sound system. Ben and the boys deliver on energy and vivacity, resulting in the audience becoming a sea of arms, legs and an energy you have to feel to believe! Ending the show with the unsurpassable ‘!(the song formerly known as)’- also from ‘Unit’ – a pivotal anthem for any Gurge fan- the Gov is transformed into a scene from past Big Day Outs- where a lot of us have seen the boys tear up the stage in a frenzied attack of juvenile, effervescent energy. Ending on a high is an understatement! The three lad’s farewell their audience in true Regurgitator style- in a display of mateship, gratitude and of course, idiocy. With Quan, Ben and Peter graciously thanking their audience, they definitely leave you wanting more.

Spanning two decades on the Australian music scene, Regurgitator continue to ‘’set the bar” for the Australian Alternative rock/ Grunge and Electronica scene. Their ever-evolving sound and passion for what they do, Regurgitator has more than earned their plethora of success. A job well done lads! Keep it comin’!
