Review: RSO-Richie Sambora & Orianthi

For a chilly Monday night, the Adelaide Entertainment Centre Theatre crowd were in great spirits as the combined guitar powerhouse of Richie Sambora & Adelaide’s Orianthi, performing under the moniker of RSO, rocked the socks off of Adelaide in the first leg of their Aussie tour.

Kicking off with the U2/B.B King hit When Love Comes to Town, RSO delivered a blend of their own hits from Sambora’s Bon Jovi era (Lay Your Hands, I’ll Be There For You), some good old blues riffs, some of Orianthi’s songs (According To You), and an outstanding version of Michael Jackson’s Black Or White, each track showing off the duo’s mastery of the guitar.

Looking like rock’s ultimate couple, Orianthi (wearing a silver mesh dress, knee high boots and long blonde tresses) and Sambora (sporting the trademark hat and an AC/DC T-shirt), let fly on the strings in a twin guitar attack that had audience members in awe at their sheer skill and ability.

Although light on audience interaction, the pair, and in particular Orianthi, paused to thank the crowd between songs and it was evident that the Adelaide girl was glad to be home, albeit briefly.

The couple have been an item for the past 2 years or so, and have been virtually inseparable since. The chemistry on stage between the two is obvious, and watching them interact like a high school couple on occasion is kind of cute. One thing for certain though, is that the combined talents of both Richie Sambora and Orianthi are about as good as it gets. The duo, along with their band, were tight and played every nuance in each song accordingly, especially during Livin’ On A Prayer and the encore song, Wanted Dead Or Alive

Opening for the rock duo was ARIA Award winner and fellow Adelaidean Sarah McLeod (Superjesus), who wowed the audience with her vocally splendid acoustic set. She managed to sing a doo-wop/barbershop number accompanied only by her iPod, who needs back-up singers these days anyway!

If slick guitar licks are your thing, then you might want to catch RSO, who might just be the new ‘Sonny and Cher of Rock!’
