duckLast night Glam Adelaide was lucky enough to be invited along to charcoal restaurant Hoosegow at 419 Magill Road, St Morris. We were treated to a sneak peek of their upcoming 5 course degustation dinner paired with Running With Bulls wines, which opens to the public on August 6th. Here’s all the details to get your tastebuds tingling…

Let’s start by discussing the elephant in the room; the name Hoosegow. What’s that all about? Owners and passionate foodies Shadia and Ara told us they searched tirelessly to find the right name for their new pride and joy. They wanted something completely unique, unconventional and a name that stuck in your mind. Eventually they came across the word Hoosegow.

In northern America in the early 20th century Hoosegow was the common term for a prison. It covered their unorthodox yet romantic notion that they are ‘prisoners of food.’ We certainly know that feeling.

So, let’s get on to the important parts… The mouthwatering food and wine you’ll get to taste come August 6th!

Course one is a grilled haloumi, eggplant, fava bean and chilli salad paired with a 2013 La Maschera Vermentino. This dish was designed to wake you up and make sure you were paying attention! A real fresh and zesty kick to the tastebuds. The wine matched perfectly balancing out the powerful chilli and cleansing the palate.

The next course was always going to be a winner, before the dish even hit the table. Charcoal grilled scallops with pork belly (is there a better flavour combination out there? We think not), chorizo and chickpeas. This was served up with the hero wine of the evening, the 2015 Running With Bulls Barossa Garnacha. This wine has never been tasted by the public (well ok, until we had a sneaky sip) and will have its first official pour at the official Running With Bulls Hoosegow dinner on August 6th, reason in itself to book if you ask us.

Between courses Shadia and Ara told us about the humble beginnings of their unique restaurant concept and how making their dreams a reality wasn’t always an easy task (trying to find a conventional charcoal oven is one thing, finding a chef who knows how to cook on one was quite another!)

Through it all this drive and passion has been poured into the creation of not only an incredible menu, but also a beautiful space.

Third on the menu was owner Shadia’s signature dish. The spicy chicken fried casava with cuban mojo has been the jewel in her cooking crown for years, and is essentially the reason the restaurant was created in the first place. Needless to say, it’s a must try! Washing it down with Running With Bulls famous Tempranillo (2014) was a treat. Punchy but not overpowering, juicy, sticky, flavoursome… we could go on and on but you’ll just have to try it for yourself.

Then came our favourite course of the night. Tournedos rossini eye fillet steak on a truffle garlic crouton topped with duck liver pate and madeira sauce served with a glass of Yalumba The Signature 2012. Rich and indulgent, perfect and wintery. The steak was cooked to an exquisite medium rare and all the delicious accompaniments only highlighted this further. We’d happily have taken 5 courses of this and called it a night, although we probably would’ve had to roll out of the restaurant.

And of course, although we were completely full to the brim and simply couldn’t consume another morsel, then came dessert. Chocolate peanut fondant with sweet sour cherries and salted caramel brittle and a glass of Yalumba Museum Muscat. Dear lord. What a flavour combo. Sweet, sour and and salty all at the same time. The perfect end to an incredible dinner.

All in all the pairing of Hoosegow’s food passion with Running With Bulls’ sensational wines made for a night laughter and inspiration between courses and silence accompanied by some very sporadic questionable noises from all ends of the table during courses.

Whether you’re a passionate foodie (like we are) or just someone looking for something a bit different for your Adelaide dining experience, Hoosegow is a must try!

The upcoming Running With Bulls 5 course degustation at Hoosegow is only $99 per person including wine. You’ll be treated to incredible food and drink, interaction with the owners and winemakers, flamenco dancers and of course that illusive first taste of the Running With Bulls 2015 Garnacha. A night not to be missed!
