Review: My Kingdom For A Horse

My Kingdom For A Horse has certainly galloped straight into pleasing our stomachs with their amazing food. But it was so much more than just the food. Read our full wrap up on our experience at Adelaide’s newest cafe

The newest kid on the block opened its doors officially to the public yesterday morning, so we galloped in to be the first to grab some brunch and congratulate My Kingdom For A Horse on their first day of success. And success it was, as we found the café, nestled in the quiet south west of Adelaide, bustling with people.

We here at Glam wrote about the café a few weeks go, before it opened, talking with owners Emily Raven and Rachel Mead and their dreams for My Kingdom For A Horse (which you can read here), and boy, have they ever exceeded our expectations.

Sleek and clean interior. Just right.

Sleek and clean interior. Just right.

My Kingdom For A Horse is the ultimate in city brunching, with free car parking on Wright Street, and a spacious and light café… what more could you ask for on a Tuesday morning?

That’s not to mention the menu, which is absolutely stunning, full of healthy treats and the ever-important local produce. Brunches and lunches were made to be consumed in large amounts, a memo that Mead and Raven obviously got, given the generous portions that came out on our plates.

If you’ve got a little bit of a sweet tooth (like us) you really can’t go past their ricotta and blueberry hotcakes. Dished up fluffy, warm, and covered in seeds, Kangaroo Island honey and fresh blueberries it’s a sweet option that doesn’t make you feel guilty.

Pure pancake heaven.

Pure pancake heaven.

Of course, some of us prefer a hearty breakfast, which is provided in spades with the full Kingdom: eggs, poached to perfection, chorizo, bacon, mushroom relish and toast. Yes please!

We went all out with our ordering, selecting more items than people (our eyes were bigger than our bellies), treating ourselves to the Barossa free-range chicken sandwich and their version of the café staple, smashed avocados. Both were a delicious addition to our meal. The avocados and roasted black tomatoes throwing a lime party on our taste buds, and the chicken, slaw, and pickles adding a filling hit to the meal.

All of the chicken!

All of the chicken!

Of course, we couldn’t review a café without mentioning the coffee… and it’s what My Kingdom For A Horse pride themselves on, and it’s a well placed pride. The team roasts their coffee onsite, and after you have experienced their magnificent house roast you can pick up your own bag of their specialty roast on your way out.

The daily necessity.

The daily necessity.

We probably should mention that My Kingdom For A Horse is a family friendly venture, with ample space and a children’s menu! Perfect for family weekend outings.

Hopefully everyone will find their way down to this little west side gem for a hearty feed, with excellent service (it’s table service!), local produce, and the best coffee we’ve had all week!
