Review: L7 – Still Fast, Lean, and Frightening!

unspecifiedFor a group of ladies in their 50’s, L7 showed no signs of slowing down as they turned The Gov into a sweaty mosh pit on Friday night. Like a good wine, L7 have well improved with age and have a tighter, more defined sound than when we first experienced during the late 80’s.

Singer/guitarist Donita Sparks, Guitarist Suzi Gardner, Drummer Dee Plakas and Bass Player Jennifer Finch churned out song after song in a Ramones-like set that was hard and fast, barely stopping to breathe between songs, but still showing the crowd some love in the process.

It was great to see a cross-section of fans out to see the Queens of the Riot Grrrl genre strut their stuff, and there was an abundance of mohawks, tattoos, piercings, and torn jeans along with a diverse mixture of ages. There were also some quite conservative looking types along to see the spectacle, many of whom ended up ‘down the front in the pit’, enjoying the scrum of sweaty, moshing bodies that were there to enjoy the music. It was hard to deny that these girls know how to rock, and they pulled the crowd in right from the word go. For The Gov to put in a barrier at the front of the stage, you knew things were always going to be wild, and the energy in the room was buzzing all night.

Local act Glass Skies were great openers, and held their own in a solid support act that was fast, loud, and overall great apart from the odd bit of feedback (that I suppose added to the grungy ambience).

L7 have a couple of nights off before heading to Melbourne next week, so get out the Doc Martins, spike that hair up, and get out to see these legendary ladies of grunge! It’s not just a bit of nostalgia for those of us who caught them the first time around during the 80s/90s, it’s a great night of raw, no bullshit music that’ll rip your face off!

Grab a ticket before they sell out!
