Review: A$AP Ferg Blackout Special

864x474_asap_fergAt a night when all of Adelaide was in pitch black and Adelaide’s nightlife was at a virtual standstill, one man decided that his headline show was going to go ahead come hell or high water (pardon the pun). American scene giant A$AP Ferg insisted the show would proceed despite Adelaide’s now legendary blackout. In response, somehow The Gov managed to get a generator organised last minute and the show went ahead, albeit, even if the door staff had to contend with candles.

After the bulk of the crowd had meandered in as word spread throughout Adelaide that the show was still going head, the atmosphere was simply jacked up. This was in part due due to the eerie generator lit light as well as the once in a lifetime all state blackout.

Hot rapper A$AP Ferg is part of a very in collective including hip hop giant A$AP Rocky, as well as: A$AP Twelvyy, A$AP Nasp, A$AP TyY and A$AP Ant. With as much international street cred as one could muster without being Drake, Ferg managed to have the crowd heaving right from the start. In fact, there was virtually no let up throughout a very consistent hour long set, with a sense of madness descending over the event.

“Let it Bang” and “Shabba” were arguably the highlights of the set, but there was no point where the raw energy throughout the entire venue wasn’t at boiling point. A$AP Ferg and The Gov deserve to be commended for letting this show happen and really going above and beyond on a night where they could be forgiven for giving up. The sound was huge and intense from the get go and the dark lighting actually made The Gov look less of a community hall than it tends to during most gigs, with a blue moody light permeating through the venue.

This was the most raucous crowd this reporter had seen in eons, no doubt due to the exceedingly rare circumstances, and the event will go down in memory as one of the most unique in living memory in Adelaide.
