Redbacks Fight For Sheffield Shield Victory

The West End Redbacks have secured a sensational 43-run victory over the PKF Tasmanian Tigers in their Weet-Bix Sheffield Shield match at Bellerive Oval, played over four days in Tasmania from the 26th – 29th November.

The West End Redbacks have secured a sensational 43-run victory over the PKF Tasmanian Tigers in their Weet-Bix Sheffield Shield match at Bellerive Oval , played over four days in Tasmania from the 26th–29th November.

With Tasmania needing a further 77 runs on the final day, Redbacks bowler Peter George (5/28) ruined any chances for the home side with a devastating five-wicket haul in the second innings to seal the Redbacks first win of the Shield season.

The Redbacks got off to the perfect start with Rob Cassell (4/58) dismissing Tasmanian captain George Bailey on the first ball of the day and it was not long before they had their next scalp with Luke Butterworth out soon after.  With Cassell at one end, George was the wrecking ball for the Redbacks as he cleaned up the tail to finish with match figures of 9/93 after his four wickets in the first innings.

The win completes a brilliant come from behind effort after the Redbacks began their second innings 196 runs behind Tasmania. A 152-run partnership between Aiden Blizzard (115) and Graham Manou (77) proved to be influential as the Redbacks posted a second innings for 416.  The Redbacks middle order shattered the hopes of the home side as Dan Christian’s 93 off 69 balls catapulted them to a lead of 220 runs – too much for Tasmania, who were dismissed for 177.

Redbacks coach Mark Sorell said it was a fantastic victory.

“We worked hard to put ourselves in a winning position and it was great to be able to execute our plans,” Sorell said.

“All credit goes to our bowlers this morning we knew we had to strike early and it’s a great victory and great to have our first Shield win.”

The Redbacks will remain in Hobart to play the PKF Tasmanian Tigers in the Ryobi One Day Cup on Wednesday, 1 December 2010.
