Thousands of South Australians are embracing the opportunity to source fresh local produce direct from producers and farmers, and the trend is on the rise with the Adelaide Showground Farmers’ Market experiencing record crowds in recent weeks.
New stalls, the wide range of products available and vibrant family activities are key attractions spiking interest in weekly visits to the markets, says Adelaide Showground Farmers’ Market Inc. General Manager, Elaine Ratcliffe.
“We experienced a record crowd the Sunday after Easter, with over 7,200 customers visiting the market between 9am and 1pm, which is a 20 per cent increase from last year,” Ms Ratcliffe said.
“We’ve had an injection of new stalls at the weekly markets over the past month also, including an organic wine producer, a charcuterie stall offering pate, terrines and rillettes, and an Afghani food stall.
“There’s also a variety of exciting activities happening each week, such as our Kids’ Club program, cooking demonstrations, gardening sessions and quarterly family fun days.”
During February and March 2015, the Adelaide Showground Farmers’ Market also experienced a 5 per cent increase in the number of shoppers attending the market. Its sister market in Prospect has also seen an increase in trade at the weekly Thursday night twilight markets in the past few months.
Ms Ratcliffe said she’s not surprised by the increase, with more people becoming aware of food quality and knowing where there food is coming from, while being conscious of both the environmental impact and the need to support South Australian businesses.
“Shopping at the markets is a fantastic family experience and has so many great benefits, such as supporting local and sustainable food production and teaching kids about food quality,” she said.
The Adelaide Farmers’ Market is the largest of its kind in South Australia with around 90 local farmers and producers representing every region of the state, selling fresh, seasonal produce direct to consumers.
The Adelaide Showground Farmers Market is open every Sunday from 9am to 1pm at the Showground in Wayville (via Leader Street). Entry is free and there is plenty of parking available onsite.
The Prospect Farmers’ Market – adjacent to Prospect Town Hall on Prospect Road – is open each Thursday from 3pm and will revert to an earlier closing time of 6.30pm from May, due to daylight savings and winter.
