Police have praised the behaviour of a record 25,000 strong crowd at this year’s McLaren Vale Bank SA Sea and Vines Festival.

There were zero arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol and no road accidents related to the event across the long weekend.

Sergeant Malcolm Marr from South Coast Police said his team was very happy with crowds’ activity and the festival’s organisation.

“Generally everything has run very smoothly and we’ve had minimal issues,” he said.

“Four people were arrested for being a bit rowdy across the weekend but, out of crowds this size across dozens of venues, we consider that to be a great outcome.

“It’s also excellent that, just like last year, we have had zero cases of drink driving related to this huge wine festival.”

The South Australian RAA runs a designated driver program across the weekend, providing gifts, alcohol-free drinks and vouchers for drivers.

Charles Mountain, RAA’s Senior Manager of Road Safety, said this year’s designated driver program was well received with hundreds of people registering.

“We are really pleased that festival goers have taken the message on board and organised a designated driver or alternative transport, rather than making the wrong decision by enjoying too many drinks and getting behind the wheel.”

Nick Reade, Chief Executive of festival sponsor BankSA, said it’s been a fantastic weekend.

“BankSA is delighted to have, once again, played an integral part in bringing the world class wine and produce of the Fleurieu to the people of South Australia,” he said.
