With a 2013 Broadway revival currently touring the US, the Tony Award-Winning Musical Pippin will open at the Victor Harbor Town Hall on October 8 in its magical finale to the 2016 South Coast Choral and Arts Society (SCCAS) season.
Directed by 2015 and 2016 ATG award-winning actor Robert Bell in his directorial debut, Robert takes on his hardest role yet. “The entire team has really come together and is genuinely enjoying the creative process. Our production is vibrant, alive and very occasionally pokes fun at the art of theatre. It’s hard to stay seated when I can see the entire cast having so much fun on stage. Pippin is definitely a night the whole family can enjoy.”
This play-within-a-play orchestrated by the cunning, but charming Leading Playing (Emily-Jo Davidson) tells the story of Pippin (Jack Doherty), a young prince searching for his purpose in life, something completely fulfilling and extraordinary, his ‘Corner of the Sky’.
Guided by the Leading Player, Pippin finds himself on a misadventure of epic proportions. The journey Pippin is destined to take finds him thrown into the middle of a glorious battle, a very intimate encounter, a maliciously evil plot and an unforgettably ‘wise’ life lesson. This leads Pippin to realise that happiness is more complicated than he first thought.
Jam-packed with larger than life dance numbers, choreographer Rebecca Kemp has taken Bob Fosse’s (Chicago) iconic dance style and given it her own interpretation. With support from the local dance schools, Pippin showcases some of the incredible talent The Fleurieu has to offer. Jacqui Maynard has the enormous task of bringing the musical score to life and with many familiar local musicians, she does just that. Written by composer Stephen Schwartz (Wicked), the music is the heart and soul of this production. The audience will no doubt hear similarities to Schwartz’s more famous works such as Wicked, Godspell, Pocahontas and The Prince of Egypt.
Pippin runs in a limited season of just eight performances at Victor Harbor Town Hall, 12 Coral St Victor Harbor, from October 8 to 22, with all tickets $14 – $20 .Book at www.sccas.org.au
