Adelaide Stylist Helen Edwards has always had a love of the vintage and the upcycled, and now she is bringing this passion to the world via Recycled Interiors.
Growing up with Hippie parents who had a love of the old, she was often taken to dusty second hand stores as a very small child and would come home with a special piece of the past. A keen DIY’er she is an advocate for sustainable decorating and upcycling and says the blend of vintage and modern is fast becoming a firm decorating trend.
After working in Social Work for many years and starting her own successful charity, Helen decided it was time to share her passion and launched www.recycledinteriors.org in April 2013. Enjoying rapid growth with over 32,000 followers and more than 10,000 visitors each month, she has engaged with a community eager to get their hands dirty and get stuck into some DIY when it comes to decorating their homes. Helen says her background in working with people enables her to connect closely with how clients want their home decorated.
“Our wellbeing is impacted on by our surroundings, we need to feel secure, happy and connected in our homes, and the decorating choices you make are key to this” explains Helen.
“There is a real shift back towards the handmade, the old and the personal when it comes to decorating our homes” she goes on to say. “People want a connection to history, each other and the romance of the past. And we are enjoying once again the “old” crafts of furniture painting, knitting, crochet and more.”
This growing groundswell for DIY and upcycling is paramount in what Helen does in both her blogging and Interior Styling Practice, encouraging people to think outside the square, think local and think sustainable.
“There is no excuse for not considering our impact on the environment and our own health when decorating our homes anymore, the choices are endless” Helen says.
According to Helen this encompasses everything from your choice of paint for the walls, to the light fittings, flooring and soft furnishings. In many cases you can now access eco friendly materials and products, as well as many pieces using reclaimed and recycled materials in their construction. And you can have a go yourself at upcycling furniture for your own home. It is not just about the construction of the home, but what you do inside that matters too.
Recycled Interiors is launching their new studio in Rostrevor with an opening party on 17th July. Offering workshops for Adelaide residents in chalk painting furniture, as well as Websters Chalk Paint Powder sales, which can be added to any Acrylic Paint to create your own chalk paint, and with other crafts such as tie dying soon to be added to the workshop list, the new Studio in Rostrevor will become a hub for Adelaide people wanting to get creative in upcycling & decorating their homes.
