Yogyakarta based band, Risky Summerbee and the Honeythief, are one of those outfits that gets labelled “Indie pop”, because no one can work out what other genre to put them in.

I think the genre they fall under is “utterly sublime”.

Lead singer and multi-instrumentalist, Summerbee, heads up a group of five, razor-sharp musicians, delivering songs of the personal and the political, in styles ranging from jazz to rock to Doors-like, keyboard driven, poetry to pop.

risky-summerbe-2Summerbee shares keyboard and guitar work with the gutsy, energetic, Erwin Zubiyan. Doni Kurniawan on bass drives the rhythm superbly along with Besom Adi Kuncoro, who works a whole percussive range, along with the standard drum kit. Widhiasmoro Risang on keyboards completes the line-up. Not a missed beat. Not a note out of place.

The group moved through numbers like On A Bus and The Place I Wanna Go, from the album of that name, to Revolution and Pictures of Yesteryear, from the more recent Pillow Talk album.  Unfortunately, because of the tightly packed program for Oz Asia, they were only able to do a short encore: the crowd wanted much, much more!

Putting this act in The Space, was an excellent idea, as it allowed for cabaret-style seating and a dance-floor, which stayed, sadly, empty.  I think if the band had played longer, it might have been used.

If you didn’t get to see them this time, check out their songs on the interwebs. Take the plunge and buy a CD.

No self-respecting music-lover could be disappointed with this class act.
