Over 100 years of Oakbank History at Somerled Wines

Family business Somerled Wines shares a unique history with Oakbank, as their name comes from the horse ridden by winemakers Rob’s grandfather at the local Oakbank Picnic Races in 1908.

Rob Moody has over 40 years of winemaking experience at iconic homes such a Penfold’s and Wynns.

Set in the beautiful Adelaide Hills, Rob, Heather, Emma and Lucy Moody are involved with every step of Somerled Wines production.

Lucy Moody says that people often comment that visiting Somerled’s Cellar Door has been the highlight of their trip to the Adelaide Hills.

“We’re a small family business and in our cellar door its very obvious to people that we’re really passionate about our wines,” she says.

At Somerled Cellar Door in Handorf, a quaint hamlet in the Hills, you can go ‘Once Around the Track’ with one of the Moody family members, or with Cate Lister, our lovely local team member.

A guided ‘Once Around the Track’ tasting will take you through Somerled’s award-winning Sparkling Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, light bistro-style ‘Picnic Races Red’, and the flagship wine, the Somereld Shiraz.

Lucy Moody explains that they concentrate on on a small range of super premium wines.

“Our first wine was our McLaren Vale Shiraz and that was the wine that dad originally specialised in because he spent many years with Penfolds making those big, rich, complex South Australian red wines,” she says.

“Mum makes lovely Spanish influenced platters, we’ve created these platters especially to complement our range of wines.”
