Oscars….Glam’s Tips

200px-82nd_Academy_Awards_posterYes its that time of year again….with a difference.  The Academy sought to revamp the Oscars to give it more appeal and have introduced ten Best Picture nominees rather than the traditional five which harks back to the 1940’s when between 8 to 12 films were shortlisted.  And now if you will please hand me that envelope…..

Best Picture Nominees: Avatar, The Hurt Locker, Up,District 9, Inglorious Basterds, An Education, A Serious Man, Up in the Air, Precious, The Blind Side.  It is being touted as the David and Goliath battle with one of the most highest grossing and costliest film in Avatar up against relatively modest budget of Hurt Locker. The winner will be Hurt Locker as much will be made of this film direction of an essentially war movie.

Best Director Nominees: James Cameron (Avatar), Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker), Jason Reitman (Up in the Air), Quentin Tarantino (Inglorious Basterds) and Lee Daniels (Precious).  Yep it will be down to the ex husband/wife to spar it out for top honour.  The eventual winner should be Kathryn Bigelow.

Best Actor Nominees: Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), George Clooney (Up in the Air), Colin Firth (A Single Man), Morgan Freeman (Invictus) and Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker).  In typical tinseltown voting fashion Jeff Bridges will take it out for this aka “The Wrestler” redemption piece however it should have gone to Colin Firth in his best performance to date as George Falconer.

Best Actress Nominees: Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side), Meryl Streep (Julie & Julia), Helen Mirren (The Last Station), Carey Mulligan (An Education) and Gabourey Sidibe (Precious).  The popular Sandra Bullock is firm favourite closely followed by Meryl Streep who should just be given her own category however I will go out on a limb and pick Gabourey Sidibe.

Best Supporting Actor Nominees: Matt Damon (Invictus), Woody Harrelson (The Messenger), Christopher Plummer (The Last Station), Stanely Tussi (The Lovely Bones) and Christoph Waltz (Inglorious Basterds).  The Winner without a doubt will by Christoph Waltz as Col. Hans Landa.

Best Supporting Actress Nominees: Penelope Cruz (Nine), Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air), Maggie Gyllenhaal (Crazy Heart), Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air) and Mo’Nique (Precious).  My pick is Mo’Nique as Mary Lee Johnson is this strong contender field.

My other tips are Up for Best Animated Feature and Inglorious Basterds for Best Original Screenplay.  Telecast on Channel 9 today.
