Ask any barista, Aussies are a fussy bunch when it comes to coffee. Forget a straight latte or cappuccino, a new survey of coffee drinkers by Nespresso reveals there are 1,001* different ways they like their coffee to be made, with 87% of Australians admitting to giving specific instructions when ordering their coffees, with everything from strong or double shot (42%) to not too hot (15%).

With the rising trend of cooking and entertaining at home, there is a new type of pressure to become the ultimate host. The survey reveals that now impressive barista skills are a must, with 87% of Australians viewing someone a better host if they can make a cup of coffee exactly how they like it.

The survey by Nespresso reveals two in three (67%) Australians say they would spend longer at a friend or family member’s house if they offered a good coffee and 41% would be more likely to visit their house again. And apparently it’s a no-no to offer an instant coffee when it comes to visitors, with one in three (36%) saying they would even go as far as to decline a drink if the freeze dry option was offered.

“These days, it’s not just about the quality of the food and wine at a dinner party. People have high expectations when it comes to their coffee and rightly so. There is nothing more annoying than finishing a nice meal with a bad coffee! Preference is personal and individual and people expect a quality coffee wherever they are. Nespresso offers 22 Grands Crus coffees all with noticeable differences in intensity or aromas to cater to every taste,” said Karsten Ranitzsch, Head of Coffee for Nespresso.

A bad coffee from a café or restaurant is also likely to leave a bitter taste in the mouth, with 50% of Aussies saying it makes them feel angry, 17% are left feeling regretful and for 6% it completely ruins their day. Baristas should beware, there are no second chances with coffee connoisseurs, with almost one in two (47%) saying if they receive a bad coffee they won’t ever go back.

“Australians are cooking at home more than ever and with this has come an increased interest in experimenting in the kitchen, even down to our coffees. With over 1,001 different ways Australians like their coffee to be made, there is a lot of pressure on the host to deliver,” he added.

A Nespresso machine can relieve some of this stress, by providing both convenience and consistency to ensure a lasting impression. Nespresso makes it easy for anyone to be a barista at home with a range of machines and 22 Grand Cru coffees delivering the perfect cup of coffee, time after time.
