New Screen Makers Conference

The New Screen Makers Conference brings some of the country’s most successful practitioners together to talk about their experiences & contemporary pathways.

Making digital content is easier than ever, but how do the new screen practitioners create a sustainable career? The New Screen Makers Conference brings some of the country’s most successful practitioners together to talk about their experiences, contemporary pathways and how to monetise screen content.

Earlier this year, the Media Resource Centre (MRC) held a series of focus groups on how to assist the new generation in a changing content and funding landscape. Early screen practitioners, screen businesses and the tertiary sector attended the focus groups.

With revolutions in both production and consumption, emerging filmmakers have significant new opportunities, but are expected to take up these opportunities with limited funding, with support for this cohort significantly cut.

“New screen makers still need support as they traverse new and traditional pathways but, with less resources available to them, must be able to connect to audiences quicker and develop business models which come with income streams earlier” says MRC director Gail Kovatseff.

“The New Screen Makers Conference was born out of this requirement. We need to give the new generation of screen makers access to the knowledge on how to create, produce and monetise their content.”

The conference speakers chosen are experts in new content platforms and will provide tips and skills in making content that is audience-focussed. Featured key speakers include Georgina Powell of YouTube, Marshall Heald of SBS and Rebecca Heap of ABC’s iView offering insight into what their platforms are looking for and what their audiences want.

Other conference speakers include Tamasin Simpkin – the producer of the highly successful online web series The Katering Show and Julie Kalceff the writer, director and producer of the smash-hit web series Starting From … Now! who will give their perspective on how their models worked for them, and distributers from Indie Village and Titan View lift the lid on what they are after in the market.

Opening the conference is the keynote given by AACTA and International Emmy award-winning producer Marcus Gillezeau (Firelight Productions) who will discuss the industry trends and opportunities for filmmakers in the current convergent media landscape.

As a membership-based organisation with a substantial history in developing emerging filmmakers, the MRC is committed to providing access to opportunities to the next generation. MRC members can attend the two-day conference for as little as $25 and non-members rates are very competitive.

Book early as there are limited spaces available. For more information, visit the MRC website.
