A new jersey to be worn by thousands of recreational riders in next year’s Bupa Challenge Tour has been revealed.
Tourism Minister Leon Bignell said the distinctive 2015 jersey featured the ochre shade synonymous with the Santos Tour Down Under, along with eye-catching bright blue panels.
“The Bupa Challenge Tour was the Tour Down Under’s most popular associated event, with more than 6,600 people taking part this year,” he said. “It’s a great way for cycling fans and fitness enthusiasts to experience a UCI WorldTour event, and to test themselves on the same route used by top international cyclists.”
The 2015 Bupa Challenge Tour – presented by The Advertiser – will take place between Glenelg and Mount Barker. The full route is 151.7 kilometres, with three other distances also available to suit riders of all abilities.
Cyclists can choose to start from Willunga (118.7km), Mount Compass (77.5km) or Macclesfield (27km).
Minister Bignell said the Bupa Challenge Tour was a celebration of community, fitness, and the many benefits of cycling.
“Whether you’re a regular cyclist, or just someone who enjoys a casual ride as a social activity, the Bupa Challenge Tour is an opportunity to be part of the Santos Tour Down Under and create some great memories in the process,” he said.
“While participants would have their times recorded, the event is not a race. Friendly rivalry is certainly part of the day, but most of all we want people to have fun.
“Next year’s course is challenging – including a climb up Sellicks Hill – so it would be important for riders to pace themselves and save some energy to celebrate at the finish line.”
Bupa Challenge Tour participants are encouraged to support the work of Cancer Council SA, the Santos Tour Down Under’s charity partner, and register to ride for a reason.
The 2015 Bupa Challenge Tour will be held on Friday January 23, 2015.
