Adelaide Fringe

Dive Down For This Underwater Musical Fringe Show

In its SA premiere, Wet Sounds will transform swimming pools into art spaces, immersing the public in a deep listening experience while floating or diving in the water.

Adelaide Fringe shows keep getting more and more unique: from nerdy burlesque to sh*tfaced Shakespeare, no two shows are the same. While many allow for audience participation, its rare you hear of fully immersive experiences at the Fringe.

Wet Sounds is a mixture of sound art and uninhibited water fun where swimmers are invited to dive and immerse themselves in specially-composed music, and to witness performances devised by Adelaide’s own The Dive Shack.

In its SA premiere, Wet Sounds will transform swimming pools into art spaces, immersing the public in a deep listening experience while floating or diving in the water.

Sound travels four times faster in water than it does in the air, and is perceived by the entire body and the inner ear. Underwater, the sound is very clear, detailed, and gives an unusual feeling of womb-like privacy within a public space. The music is an eight-channel composition divided to speakers above and below the water surface.

The water surface acts as a threshold between two worlds, the public and the private, the real and the imaginary. Accessed for the duration of a breath of air, the audience member crosses the threshold between two different music and two entirely different listening experiences exploring the gravity free watery space with movement.

Looking into the depths of the pool, audiences will discover scenes emerging beneath them as scuba performers use the pool floor to stage surreal scenes and interact with audiences who dive in.

No two experiences are alike. The music draws on electro-acoustic and collage traditions to create a charged and dynamic composition that activates the sports centre space into the realms of fantasy and abstraction.

Since 2008, Wet Sound performances have been hosted by the Red Bull Music Academy at Montreal’s Olympic pool, Helsinki Festival at Helsinki’s Olympic pool, Ultima Festival at Oslo Olympic Pool, and have visited over 100 pools in the UK, France, Belgium, Germany, Canada, Australia, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Estonia and Denmark.

Swimwear compulsory, goggles recommended.
