When pop heavyweights Madonna and Britney Spears are knocking on your door – you know you’ve made it. Such is life for Australian songwriter, producer, model, spokesperson and DJ Miriam (Mim) Nervo and her twin sister Olivia. Better known by their last name, Nervo have gone from strength to strength in the pop and dance worlds. Co-writing and producing the Grammy-winning ‘When Love Takes Over’ with French DJ du jour David Guetta in 2009, this year has proved just as successful for the duo.
When I last spoke to Mim in 2010, there were rumours of a potential Nervo collaboration on the then-upcoming Britney Spears album Femme Fatale. Whilst the Australian pair may have been overlooked for some faux-dubstep and Will.I.Am co-writes, Britney did one better for Nervo sisters – she invited them to open for her Femme Fatale Tour across the world, alongside Nicki Minaj and Jessie & The Toyboys. All in all, 2011? Big year for the sisters.

‘We feel so blessed. Our songs have been getting a lot of attention. We’re on David Guetta's album again which is great, doing a song with Jennifer Hudson [‘Night of My Life’]. But the tour with Britney Spears and Nicki Minaj… I mean, this is the girl that I used to watch on TV every morning and go crazy to. I grew up on Britney! We’ve definitely knocked down some milestones this year’
Mim had even more reason to celebrate – she revealed Nervo’s track ‘We’re All No One’ with Afrojack and Steve Aoki just reached #1 on the UK Club Charts. Another thing to tick off Nervo’s ever-decreasing to-do-list.
Even pop queen Madonna sought out a Nervo collaboration for her upcoming 2012 album. A natural fit – both blondes, both Italian, both with roots in club and dance music. Such a pairing could have easily catapulted the duo into legend status (much like Madonna’s other collaborators – Mirwais, Stuart Price, William Orbit). The song in question however was deemed ‘too good’ to give away, as Mim explained.
‘She definitely wanted one of our records, but our label really wanted us to keep the track for ourselves. So it’s our next single! It’s the track we’ve done with Avicii. I think it’s so great that she wanted to work with us, but she let go of the collaboration, and we’re releasing now, so don’t worry, the song will still come to life’
With the UK charts in check, Mim and Liv have the US on their radar. High-profile collaborations aside, the growing popularity of dance and club music in America has allowed Nervo, and other fellow DJ cum producers cum artists like Diplo, Calvin Harris, Avicii and Afrojack to have their music reach the masses like never before.
‘I think what is now ‘dance’ music is really just another variation of pop music’ says Mim.
‘There’s still ‘club’ music and certainly different genres that differ to what you hear on the radio, but the line between dance and pop has been blurred. It’s great though, because DJs are really just like different kinds of chocolate bars! [laughs] There will always be something different. But I do feel that what we used to call ‘dance’ music five or so years ago in the UK is now considered pop music in America’
Ever excited to be home for the New Year’s celebrations and of course, Summadayze, Nervo hope they can keep the tradition of playing Summadayze on the first day of every year.
‘I’m so excited to be coming back home. Visitng the family, especially. It’s something I hope we can do every year. And it doesn’t matter where we are at midnight, we know we’ll have fun. Especially with Ruby Rose and our other DJ friends with us!’
