Aim for Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga next weekend as Adelaide plays host to the state championship and national final of the National Archery Matchplay Series supported by Splash Adelaide.
Commencing at 10am on Saturday 2 May, the National Series final will showcase the best archers from around the country who will gather in the northern tip of Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga and go head to head before shooting off to Shanghai to compete for Australia in the Archery World Cup.
On Sunday 3 May the state’s top archers will battle it out for the South Australian Matchplay Championship title from 8am and everyone’s welcome to watch.
Lord Mayor Martin Haese said Archery in Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga give the community an opportunity to experience sport at a professional level in one of the City’s premier open spaces.
“Redeveloping Victoria Square had the intention of attracting a diverse range of formal and informal activities, and welcoming archery championships into the square is a great example of the Council working with other organisations to encourage more people into the city,” said Martin.
Councillor Priscilla Corbell who recently completed her beginner’s archery course and is a member of the Adelaide Archery Club has the honour of shooting the first arrow to kick off the weekend event.
“I have watched a lot of archery over the years, and have been really keen to give it a try, and this event gives me that opportunity, I’m really looking forward to it,” said Priscilla.
“Having Adelaide selected to host this national sporting event, the winners of which will go on to Shanghai to compete in the Archery World Cup, gives the Council a chance to make a somewhat niche sport accessible to the whole community.
“It’s exciting that Olympic and Commonwealth Games athletes as well as a current world champion are competing in a place whereby the public are welcome to come and watch for free,” she said.
There will be a live DJ and commentators all weekend as well as some of Adelaide’s familiar food trucks to target people’s appetites.
For people who want to find out more about archery, there’ll be an information booth open all weekend to help them get started.
