Musos VS Media In A Charity Football Match This Weekend

Don’t miss a footy match with a difference this weekend, when the Reclink Community Cup plays off the musos against the media in its inaugural match in SA.

The Reclink Community Cup, a much-adored charity football match series that pits musicians against media annually in Sydney and Melbourne, comes to Adelaide for the first time this weekend.

On August 16, some of the state and country’s best musicians and biggest media personalities will face-off at the home of the Redlegs Football Club: Coopers Stadium (Norwood Oval).

Puffing and panting through what will undoubtedly be a fumbly and unfit game full of hilarity, the players will raise money for Reclink – an organisation that engages people experiencing disadvantage through sport and music programs.

“We wanted to bring this event to Adelaide because it’s a great day for a great cause,” says Adelaide Community Cup organiser Koral Chandler.

“Plus, we wanted to see how many musos and media types were handy with a Sherrin and get some friendly competition going between these important Adelaide communities.”

Entirely volunteer-run and backed by local community radio stations Three D Radio, Fresh 927 and Radio Adelaide, the Adelaide Community Cup will rival its eastern seaboard counterparts with a full day of family-friendly fun and footy.

The music vs media match will be the centrepiece of the day, but there will also be food, bands and entertainment on offer.

“Events like the Reclink Community Cup really demonstrate how important music is to South Australia,” says Music SA General Manager Lisa Bishop.

“Bringing together community radio personalities and other media with musicians creates a great atmosphere and builds camaraderie to create strong community ties.”

The Reclink Community Cup has a 21-year history in its hometown of Melbourne, where it has grown from a small match to a family-friendly community event that attracts crowds in excess of 10,000. The list of players who have gotten involved since the event’s inception in 1994 reads like a music industry Hall of Fame roll call and includes everyone from Paul Kelly to Dan Sultan to Courtney Barnett.

The Sydney sister event was launched in 2011, and 2015 brings an expansion into both Perth and Adelaide.

“The Adelaide Reclink Cup Organising Committee well deserve Reclink Australia’s sincere appreciation for bringing to the table their collective talents, skills, commitment and determination to make this inaugural Adelaide event a success,” says John Ballis CEO Reclink Australia.
