Mothers Remembered at Centennial Park

CENTENNIAL PARK - PEACE COURT

Hundreds of mothers, grandmothers and great grandmothers will be remembered when the State’s largest cemetery hosts a special Mother’s Day memorial service in May. Centennial Park will host the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Adelaide’s Mother’s Day Service on Saturday 10 May.

To be held in the cemetery’s Heysen Chapel from 8.30am to 10am, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese will conduct a special tribute to all mothers and grandmothers now resting at Centennial Park. This will be followed by a series of spiritual blessings of monuments across the Park.

This is the second year that Centennial Park has hosted the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese Mother’s Day service.

Centennial Park records its highest number of visitors on Mother’s Day each year, according to Centennial Park CEO Mr Bryan Elliott.

“Mother’s Day is one of the most important family times of year – in Australia and everywhere,” he said.

“Centennial Park begins preparing for the day as early as March. Our gardeners do their best to ensure our gardens are looking as best they can at this time.

“Centennial Park is a special place where people can remember and celebrate the lives of their loved ones. Our aim is to create a beautiful setting so that those coming to reflect on the life of a mother can do so in picturesque surroundings.”

On Sunday 11 May, thousands of sons, daughters, husbands and grandchildren are expected to visit Centennial Park.

“Each year, we have hundreds of families walk through the gates in the week leading up to Mother’s Day, with many more visiting on Sunday to pay their respects,” Mr Elliott said.

“Thousands of bouquets are placed by visitors in the lead-up and by Mother’s Day, Centennial Park becomes a sea of colour.

“Floral tributes are also delivered and placed on behalf of people living interstate or who are unable to personally visit Centennial Park.”

Mr Elliott said Mother’s Day was a time to remember special memories and moments shared with our mums and that the upcoming memorial service would be a fitting tribute to the spirit of the day.

“Last year’s Mother’s Day service brought together hundreds of families and friends who all shared the same special purpose – to honour the lives of mothers passed,” he said. “A memorial service to pay tribute to and commemorate the lives of mothers and grandmothers who are now resting at Centennial Park is a meaningful way to remember them.

“We are once again very pleased to host families and friends from the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Adelaide on Saturday 10 May.”

Centennial Park is SA’s largest cemetery. Set on 40 hectares of parkland, the cemetery has more than 50 individually themed gardens.
