bree-maySouth Australian 2014 My Kitchen Rules (MKR) winner, Bree May will appear at the Adelaide Showground Farmers’ Market on Sunday, 3 May, in a cooking demonstration in a bid to raise awareness for food rescue charity, OzHarvest.

As an enthusiastic OzHarvest supporter, Bree will cook a recipe from the charity’s latest cookbook, Urban Harvest, which celebrates kitchen gardens of all shapes and sizes. The cookbook includes recipes from 50 of Australia’s most celebrated chefs, in an effort to encourage families to grow and cook their own delicious and nutritious food.

After collecting her ingredients from the Adelaide Showground Farmers’ Market in the morning, Bree will cook Lamb Burgers with Sweet Pickled Cucumber and Mint Yoghurt – a recipe in Urban Harvest by MKR judge Colin Fassnidge – in the market’s demonstration kitchen.

Adelaide Showground Farmers’ Market general manager, Elaine Ratcliffe said the market was very supportive of the charity and its efforts to reduce food wastage.

“Food waste is a significant problem and being able to donate unsold food is a great way to combat this. Every week volunteers from OzHarvest visit the Showground Farmers’ Market to collect any leftover produce donated by our generous stallholders,” Ms Ratcliffe said.

In 2014, OzHarvest in South Australia delivered 1.1 million meals delivered to 100 local charitable agencies. Of these, 45,000 meals were contributed by Adelaide Farmers’ Market stallholders in 2014 and a total of 120,000 meals have been donated from stallholders since the project began in 2012. The items donated by the market stallholders go to three local charities, reducing food waste and providing nutritious food, including fresh fruit and vegetables to those in need.

OzHarvest representatives will also be on hand to chat with shoppers about opportunities to support the cause.

The Adelaide Showground Farmers Market is open every Sunday from 9am to 1pm at the Showground in Wayville (via Leader Street). Entry is free and plenty of parking is available onsite.
