MKR Champ Bree May’s Secret To Knocking Out Easy, Delicious Meals During The Week

Former My Kitchen Rules winner and food blogger, Bree May, has put her skills to test with a home delivery meal box. Here’s how she went.

Finding inspiration for dinner can be hard at the best of times, let alone setting aside time to go to the grocery store and planning out your (somewhat healthy) meals for the week. Luckily, there are stacks of options available to us now that saves on time, money and food waste. You’ve got home-delivered meals, meal boxes and even grocery stores delivering ingredients. But how do you choose and is it really worth it?

You might know we’ve recently jumped on the HelloFresh bandwagon along with a few other Adelaide foodies to give it a crack and see if this meal delivery box is worth the hype. If you’re not familiar, HelloFresh is grocery box that’s delivered weekly, which comes with matching recipes for a set number of meals and people. The ingredients align with the recipes to minimise waste. You can choose a box for two or four people, for either three or five days of meals (dinners). It’s a great option if you’re short on time or motivation for that matter. Recipes change each week too so you don’t have to worry about getting bored of eating the same thing over and over. All you have to do is choose from one of three boxes depending on your diet and how many mouths you’re feeding. The Classic Box, for omnivores; the Veggie Box for vegetarians; and the Family Box which has kid-friendly recipes. If you’re interested in giving it a go yourself, the guys at HelloFresh are taking $35 off your first box order – just choose which box you’d like by clicking here.

This week Bree May, former My Kitchen Rules winner and blogger behind ‘Food According to Bree’, has put her skills to the test and got started with her first HelloFresh box. Here’s her experience:

Let me start out by saying, I’ve never had a meal delivery service before, so it was exciting to come home to the HelloFresh box waiting for me like a present on the door step. I loved looking through it to see what delicious delights were in it.

The HelloFresh recipes were fantastic but getting creative in the kitchen is part of the fun for me so I decided to go off the cuff and tailor the ingredients provided to my own recipes. I made a Spanish Chicken and Rice and Steak and potato salad. You can’t go wrong with a perfectly cooked steak. For novice or time poor cooks, the provided recipes are easy and completely step-by-step with accompanying photographs, but if like me you want to change things up one of the things I love is that  there’s enough variety in the ingredients to ensure you never run out of inspiration. I’d rate the box as simple no matter your skill level, so don’t be shy to get creative.

I was also really pleased to see that small batch producers and free-range poultry was included in my HelloFresh box. Plus if I hadn’t already mad it clear, I absolutely LOVE rump steak, so that was a huge win for me. The HelloFresh boxes are full of quality ingredients and the produce was fresh with great shelf life.

The experience was pretty straightforward, my only challenge was deciding which meat to cook with first because how do you choose between chicken, pork or steak? HelloFresh fills the fridge and alleviates the need to visit the shops, which is fantastic again if you’re pressed for time or tired of going into the supermarket for dinner ingredients and leaving with your purse $200 lighter and a trolley full of non-essentials (we all do this!). You can certainly utilize most of the contents for a number of different dishes and easy meals.

I rarely follow recipes but I’ll absolutely use the recipe cards that come in the HelloFresh box for inspiration going forward as they are well thought out and all looked super tasty.

In a nutshell, positives were the variety, freshness and generosity of ingredients – when they say each meal feeds 4, they mean it. No real negatives to report on. Obviously meal delivery services aren’t for for everyone, but if you’re time poor, sticking to a household budget or just want the ease of planned weekly meals it’s honestly a great option for a hungry family and would completely abolish food waste.

If this sounds like something you’d like to try out, HelloFresh are giving Glam Adelaide readers $35 off their first box. Simply click here to receive discount on your first order. Like Bree you can get creative with your box or go off their recipe cards. Here are a couple of recipes we’re loving right now: Beef & Risoni Bowl or Oven Grilled Gnocchi
