His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AO, Governor of South Australia and Patron of Meals on Wheels SA (MoWSA), joined hundreds of volunteers attaining up to 60 years of service at the MoWSA Awardee Day last week.

His Excellency and Mrs Le attended the annual event – which was held at The Grand Ballroom in Fulham Gardens on Friday 14 November – which thanked, congratulated and celebrated longstanding volunteers.

Their efforts are recognised in the same year that MoWSA reaches a milestone of its own – 60 years of service and contribution to the South Australian community.

At the special luncheon, more than 300 volunteers who in 2014 celebrate; 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 and 60 years of dedicated service to Meals on Wheels in SA, were formally recognised. Those volunteers achieving 15 years’ service were also recognised with life membership status in 2014.

His Excellency presented special service awards to those celebrating 40, 50 and 60 year milestones.

Meals on Wheels SA Chief Executive Officer Mrs Sharyn Broer said she was delighted that His Excellency and Mrs Le were able to attend and His Excellency, as Patron, recognised the ongoing efforts and support of volunteers in MoWSA’s 60th year.

“Our annual Awardee Day is an opportunity to publicly acknowledge the extraordinary efforts of our inspiring volunteers,” she said.

“It is the opportunity for us to come together and pay tribute to their dedication, support and admirable work they continue to do in local communities across the State. We also look forward to welcoming the new “Life Members” who have clocked up 15 years’ service. Around 25% of our volunteers are life members.

“Without the help of volunteers, Meals on Wheels wouldn’t be possible. In addition to preparing and or delivering a delicious nourishing three-course meal, our volunteers offer a friendly smile, social contact and a check that clients are “Safe and Well”.

“They are the driving force behind our service, and as MoWSA continues to move forward during its 60th year, we hope to continue to play an integral part of communities across SA.

“On behalf of MoWSA, I pass on many congratulations and sincere thanks to all our Awardee Day recipients for their individual service milestone successes in 2014.”

Meals on Wheels SA (MoWSA) is the largest community-based volunteer organisation in South Australia, with a commitment to helping customers live independently in their homes.
