McLaren Vale Crew Partner To Create ‘The General’ Wine Bar & Kitchen

Combined passions have come together to create a new Bar and Kitchen experience in the heart of the south, and it looks incredible!

Locals, and not-so-locals; get excited.

“The General” wine bar and kitchen is set to open its doors late November; and we can’t wait! This project is the brain-child of long term friends; winemaker Ben Riggs, Brad Rey and Chef Ben Sommariva (formerly of Pennys Hill Kitchen Door and Finos Willunga).

For years they have wanted to create a place where people can meet, drink, eat, and relax, and finally, they have found the perfect location and timing to do so.

Set in the historic old McLaren Flat General Store and Post Office, the building has had just enough of a face-lift (and extension) to make it the perfect home for the aptly named “The General.”

Riggs has had a very close watch over the whole build, and has had input into every detail possible. Using local furniture maker Stephen Anthony, and materials full of character (timber from the old Adelaide Oval stands and Michelle’s Woolshed), The General feels cosy and modern, with a hint of mystery!

With Chef Ben, there is of course a very important and strong focus on great food. The menu will change on a daily basis, depending on what local produce has been sourced from one day to the next. The food will never be predictable, and guests will be encouraged to leave it to the experts, and simply be “fed” by chef. The idea is to keep it very relaxed, fluid, and fun.

They have embraced the concept of an open kitchen, so you can watch as your food is prepared right in front of you, and strike up conversation with the friendly kitchen staff.

Food will be made to match in with wine flights, and there will even be museum wines available for purchase by-the-glass, with the use of an enomatic machine. Allll the bells and whistles!

Lunch will be available every day, and on Friday nights you can enjoy “pixos”, a tapas style dinner, while you sit back, relax, and let the week’s worries wash over you and out the door.

In addition to the in-house wines of “Mr. Riggs” and Brad Rey’s “Zontes Footstep”, there will be fine Gins and cocktails available for those who want to mix it up a little.

Beer lovers never fear; there will also be a “craft beer of the week” available if you feel like a quality brew, and for coffee lovers, the great Dawn Patrol coffee will be in house to perk you up.

Whatever you fancy, the passionate staff are keen to meet you and show you a good time.

The General will be open 7 days a week, 10 am to 5pm every day, except Fridays, where they will be open until late to see you into the weekend. We’ll see you there!
