Malt Fiction: SA’s Lastest Craft Brew Stars

SA is home to champion wine, champion produce, champion coffee, a champion city and now, champion beer. Everyone, let your parochial heart swell and go and grab a Malt Fiction.

SA is home to champion wine, champion produce, champion coffee, a champion city and now, champion beer. Everyone, let your parochial heart swell and pat yourselves on the back.

But really, this Mighty Ducks moment is reserved for local craft brewers Malt Fiction, who have come back from the Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA) with three silvers and one bronze. This is one of the world’s largest annual beer competitions, and while they couldn’t quite pull the Steven Bradbury for the gold this is a massive achievement for the self proclaimed ‘Gypsy Brewery’ who have only been in operation since 2014.

So which brews won? The silver for ‘Best International Pale Ale’ and the bronze for ‘Best American Style International Pale Ale’ were given to the Draught IPA, while quite rightly the crew also took home two silvers in ‘Best Packaging’ categories.

Head brewer of Malt Fiction, Jared Birbeck, wasunderstandably stoked for the awards. “Out of 1,700 entries from 350 brewers and breweries, Malt Fiction has proven to be one of the best having been awarded so highly,” he said.
Established in 2014, Malt Fiction now has four awards up their sleeve for their brew ‘Session Ale’, and while they’re only stocking across SA presently, with this sort of attention you can expect an expansion will be on the cards in the not too distant future.
