32Over the Christmas period, the St Vincent de Paul Society (SA) provides over 50% of the total assistance provided to families in need in South Australia. These needs are basic, and include things such as clothes and food.

The reality is that for many people, the Christmas season is far from a joyous celebration. In fact, it is often the most stressful time of year. Many parents struggle to pay their bills and put food on the table during normal months, let alone dream of buying Christmas gifts for their children or preparing a special Christmas meal.

St Vincent de Paul Society (SA)’s State President, Brian Spencer, says that the difficult situations many families find themselves in is beyond what most of us could imagine.

“As rental and living costs continue to put pressure on the family budget, many people are forced to juggle difficult decisions about how best to provide for their families with very little income. We really need the support of South Australians who can afford to do so, to dig deep and make a generous donation to this year’s Vinnies Christmas Appeal,” said Mr Spencer.

This Christmas period, the St Vincent de Paul Society is expected to provide South Australians with over $0.5M worth of assistance in the form of financial support, clothing, bedding, furniture, food and gifts – so that children in need can experience the joy of having a present under their tree.

“Our 2,880 volunteers go about their work each and every day helping people when things get too hard. Many people that we assist tell us that without Vinnies, they would not be able to cope,” said Mr Spencer.
