Lycra Up And Check Out Our Guide To Where To Cycle In South Australia

This isn’t just about the professional riders, we have put together the perfect guide to cycling around our beautiful state and even the kids will be able to do it…

When the warm weather finally decides to stick around, getting out and about and exploring the beautiful state that we are blessed to live in becomes a lot more appealing.

With such a gorgeous and varied landscape to explore, from wine regions to stunning coasts and up to the outback, we really are spoilt for choice.

And what better way to explore the best of South Australia than by bike? Sure you can always go on a road trip, but that is so done and you always spend more time snoozing or playing Candy Crush than taking in the sights.

Riding your bike is the perfect way to explore our stunning state, and with a little help from the riding experts at Reid Cycles, we’ve put together this list of the top trail rides in SA that are easy enough for the whole family!

Amy Gillett Bikeway

This bikeway begins just South East of the CBD in Oakbank and is named after the late Australian track cyclist and rower.

Get the family involved with this one… It’s not too far out of the city, and safely follows the railway line along Onkaparinga Valley Road through to Mt Torrens where it splits off to Torrens Valley Road to eventually find Mt Pleasant. How pleasant.

Did we mention that there are also a number of delicious stops along this ride. Bird in Hand Winery, which is just 3 kilometres east of the trail, is well worth the extra little ride for a delicious platter and view, plus Woodside Cheese Wrights (all of the cheesy goodness)! Now that’s our kind of bike ride.

Kangaroo Island Trails

If you’re planning a weekend away with the family, Kangaroo Island is the perfect place to escape and unwind. One of the most spectacular things about Kangaroo Island is that it’s an absolute natural sanctuary, with plenty of opportunities for wildlife spotting, along with stunning landscapes and gorgeous views.

There are plenty of opportunities for cycling trips on the island. Choose day long routes, or simply jump on your bike and explore the roads.

Riverton Trails

Halfway between Port Augusta and Adelaide lies the historic region of Riverton in the Gilbert Valley. In and around the township are a number of trails to explore by bike which show off the history of this significant region. Explore cemeteries, cottages, hotels and the railways.

With plenty of trails available with varying lengths and difficulties, there is something for everyone.

Riesling Trail

Not far from Riverton is the Riesling Trail, which runs along the old Riesling railway line through the township of Clare to Auburn, and reaching a total length of 32kms.

This is another ride steeped in history, with the old towns in between start points hosting colleges, churches and homes from the 1800s. The area is also perfect for those looking for a food and wine experience with a number of wineries and cellar doors along the journey. Sign us up.

Check out the Riesling Trails website for more.

Coast to Vines Rail Trail

Just South of Adelaide is the Coast to Vines Rail Trail, spanning 37kms from the Marino Rocks Railway Station to the former site of the Willunga Station.

The track is sealed for most of the distance, with gentle gradients making it the perfect ride for the family. There is a varied landscape along the ride, from sea views along The Cove Road, to farming and rural areas.

Make a weekend of the ride, stopping to experience the wineries and delicious food on offer in McLaren Vale (don’t mind if we do).

With the school holidays slowly (and by slowly we mean ridiculously quickly) creeping up, these five trails will be the adventure that you are looking for!
