Local West Beach Legend Wins Ironman World Champs in Hawaii

Over the years, our sleepy town of Adelaide has produced some pretty notable athletes (I’m talking about you Lleyton Hewitt) and this week, another South Aussie local was officially added to that list. On October 14th, West Beach’s very own Nancy Cullen captured the world championship title in the female 60-64 age group at the 2017 IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
At 59 years of age, Nancy completed arguably the world’s biggest and most iconic endurance event in a impressive 11 hours and 56 minutes, beating other top competitors from across 66 countries, regions and territories on six continents.
Nancy was tasked with a brutal 225km workout – a 4km mass swim in Kailua Bay, followed by a 180km highway bike ride and then capped off with a 42km run to the finish line.
A huge congratulations to Nancy for bringing home the victory for South Australia, what an incredible achievement.
There’s no word yet if the 2017 IRONMAN World Championship will be broadcast here in Australia but we’ll keep you updated.
