Last Friday evening, 13 women dined together at Bird in Hand’s restaurant The Gallery as inspiration for a new painting by artist James Cochran.
Cochran began his career in Adelaide, contributing to the growing graffiti scene in the late 1980s. The early 90s saw him adopt the alias Jimmy C, as he explored aerosol art murals in cities and regional communities across the country. Then after studying at the University of South Australia, he became known for his urban realist narrative paintings in oil. In 2004 his interest in graffiti and oil painting converged and he developed his now signature style; portraits or urban landscapes painted entirely from blobs of spray paint.
Motivated by his South Australian heritage and unique approach to art, Bird in Hand commissioned Jimmy C to paint a contemporary interpretation of Leonard Da Vinci’s Last Supper. The artwork, set to adorn the ceiling of The Gallery, is being created to celebrate women; their role in creation, place in the modern world and contribution to creating a peaceful society. At over 12 meters long and 4 meters wide, it will be a striking centre piece for the venue.
The inspiration dinner served to allow artist and subjects to come together so Jimmy C could direct and photograph his group of modern muses. Bird in Hand’s resident chef Paul Gillespie custom created an ‘old world’ themed menu for the occasion and guests sipped on Lalla Victoria sparkling and Nest Egg wines.
The commission is due for completion in late February 2015.
