This Friday night at The Gov, Katie Noonan and guests will be playing songs from new album Songs That Made Me, of which 100% of profits will go to Breast Cancer research.

Performing with Angie Hart, Melody Pool and Sam Buckingham, Noonan has put together a tour of her collaborative album, which she says was born of a concert tour she curated last year and her work with Cancer Council.

“Earlier this year I was part of a campaign with the Cancer Council with women doing a version of Chrissie Amphlett’s ‘I Touch Myself’. Upon Chrissie’s tragic death from breast cancer she wanted that song to become an anthem for women to remind them to be aware of checking their breasts all the time.”

“I read up on the Pink Ribbon campaign and they’re an amazing organisation that supports women at every stage of their cancer; and cancer sadly is something that is going to affect us all in some way whether it’s directly or someone we know. So I think anything we can do to put money towards that is great,” Noonan says.

Songs That Made Me is already available on iTunes and in music stores but Noonan and friends are also selling albums at gigs with every single cent of those proceeds going to breast cancer research.

“I was able to secure some support from another fantastic company called Blooms that are helping to support the tour and the album, and for that reason we are able to make 100% of the proceeds from the album go to the Pink Ribbon campaign,” she says.

“In fact in Perth last week we sold three and a half thousand dollars worth of albums. It’s a wonderful thing. People buy something they want to buy but then they also know the money goes to a good cause. The show and the album are a celebration of sisterhood and the great Australian talent we have here.”

Playing songs made famous by artists such as Fleetwood Mac, Jeff Buckley, Nina Simone, Prince, Terence Trent D’arby, James Brown, Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell, Noonan says the women on the album are a cross section of ages, styles and influences.

“I made a wish list of great women representing a broad range of styles across varying ages. I wanted it to reflect various generations,” she says.

“So we have the legends like Renee Geyer, Angie Hart and Deborah Conway, and women I admire who are contemporaries of mine like Kylie Auldist, Sam Buckingham, Ainslie Wills and then more up and coming girls like Stonefield and Sahara Beck who’s the youngest on the album at just 19 and Melody Pool.”

Noonan says the show at The Gov tonight with Hart, Pool and Buckingham will be relaxed and laid back, the perfect thing to kick of a warm weekend.

“I’ve always had awesome shows at The Gov. We’re all on stage the whole time and it’s very collaborative, it’s very relaxed. I don’t think there’s any one song where there’s not more than one of us on it. It’s a mixed bag of stuff,” she says.

Tickets are available through Oztix and Katie and friends will be hanging back after the gig to sell albums and say hi.

“I always stick around and sign CDs and hang out. Last Thursday we opened the tour in Perth and that was special because women were coming up to us who were survivors or perhaps still in treatment or helping to care for someone and they told us their stories and it’s beautiful to share that,” she says.

Catch The Songs That Made Me tour Friday 7th November, doors open 7:30pm.
