Arkaba Commission Recipent Announced Media ReleaseThe Arkaba Hotel and the Adelaide Central School of Art are pleased to announce Kate Kurucz as the winner of the inaugural $5000 Arkaba Commission for 2014. Her proposal included three dynamic paintings featuring reflective surfaces and rich colours with a sense of playful glamour and fun.

Kate Kurucz graduated from the School with a Bachelor of Visual Art (Honours) in 2012. She was selected for the 2013 Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibition, where her work featured as the catalogue cover image, has exhibited in group shows, was awarded the People’s Choice Award in Not Just a Pretty Face  in 2014 and the Sitters Choice Award for the Royal Society of Arts South Australia portrait demonstrations.

Jenny Hurley from the Arkaba Hotel said that ‘The Arkaba Award enables us to provide an opportunity for us to support a recent graduate of the school and enhance the customer experience at the Arkaba Hotel.

We have enjoyed working with Ingrid and her team to realise this first commissioned work’.

The Arkaba Commission is for a site-specific work to be installed at the Arkaba Hotel. It will be on display for 12 months before being sold and the funds put to a scholarship for a BVA Honours student at the Adelaide Central School of Art.

The Arkaba Commission is held in partnership between the Arkaba Hotel and the Adelaide Central School of Art. Jenny and Peter Hurley, owners of the Arkaba Hotel, attended the opening of the School’s new Glenside campus in May 2013 and were so impressed by the achievements of this not-for-profit art school, that they approached the School’s CEO, Ingrid Kellenbach, to explore partnership opportunities. The Commission will be an annual commission open to graduates of Adelaide School of Art. The Arkaba Commission is a great opportunity for an emerging artist to work at a professional level, developing their work from concept to fabrication and installation. Adelaide Central School of Art is very pleased to support this opportunity for their graduates.

The Arkaba Commission is open to recent graduates of the Adelaide Central School of Art. The Commission was announced at the School’s 2013 Graduate Exhibition, with a call for proposals in March, and these were assessed by a Selection Panel including practising artists and representatives from the partner organisations. Kurucz’s completed work is scheduled to be installed in September 2014.

Ingrid Kellenbach says, ‘We see this partnership as a win-win, for Kate who will produce an exciting work, the Arkaba who are so supportive and generous to provide the funds to the artist, and of course the thousands of guests of the hotel who will engage with the work while it is on show’.
