James Blake’s Splendour Sideshow Is Upon Us

Prepare to be haunted by a voice only an Englishman could possess. James Blake is on his way to Adelaide, with countryman and Thom Yorke collaborator Max Pritchard joining him.

In one of the most highly anticipated tours in Australia this year, particularly amongst discerning indie music fans, English electronic superstar James Blake will be playing a Splendour sideshow at Thebarton Theatre.

Blake has risen to become one of the most beloved musicians within the broad indie-electronica spectrum, known as much for his soft dreamy vocals as his distinctive ambient, haunting production. With his boyish good looks and his brooding onstage persona, the production prodigy has amassed somewhat of a cult following, particularly amongst female indie fans (and this writer’s own FaceBook Newsfeed featured some interesting comments when his appearance at Splendour was announced). Thankfully, this year fans across Australia will have the opportunity to see witness one of the most highly reputed live acts out of Britain.

Blake’s latest album The Colour in Anything received a swag of great awards, including a whopping 8.2 from Pitchfork and 78 out of a 100 by Metacritic. It also features guest appearances from Justin Vernon from Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon on the soulfull “I Need a Forest Fire” and Frank Ocean on “My Willing Heart”. Perhaps the album’s highlight is the first track released “Modern Soul” which has some fantastic jazz elements filtered through some crackling textures.

In further great news, acclaimed British producer Mark Pritchard has joined the bill. Throughout his career Prichard has traversed the electronica landscape covering everything from techno, jungle, footwork and grime, maintaining his focus on staying cutting edge. Now based in Australia, Prichard has played in the Red Bull Music Academy X Boiler Room Black Box series at this year’s Dark Mofo. His current work explores the spaces between different electronic subgenres and features collaborations with huge names, including no less than Radiohead’s Thom Yorke.

James Blake and Max Pritchard play Thebarton Theatre on Thursday, July 28th with tickets through Ticketmaster.
