Interview Mourne Kransky of the Kransky Sisters

Fran Edwards interviews Mourne Kransky (Annie Lee) about her and her sisters’ up coming Xmas show, ‘A Very Kransky Christmas.

I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Mourne Kransky about the Kransky Sisters show and life in general.

The sisters are Mourne (Annie Lee), Eve (Christine Johnson) and Dawn (Carolyn Johns).

I asked Mourne how long she had been involved with music and she cheerfully told me all her life, she used to play along with the wireless when she was young and began her music career playing at the RSL club.

She told me that the sisters love travelling and meeting people. They are flattered that some fans even dress like them. Mourne says she thinks it is nice to meet people and go for some scones.

The sisters list their interests as making fudge, knitting, listening to the wireless, Looking at pictures in magazines and growing large vegetables. They have won prizes for their produce, 1st for the biggest Zucchini and another for their Pumpkin, which makes Mourne proud.

Travelling around the country in their 1958 Morris Major they enjoy sharing their versions of songs accompanied by interesting, occasionally disturbing, stories. They play a variety of unusual instruments. Apart from the keyboards, guitar and tuba; the sisters are virtuosos on the cheese grater, kitchen pots, saw and the toilet brush.

I asked Mourne what it was like travelling and playing with her sisters and she said it was mostly fine but Dawn’s silences could sometimes be un-nerving. They find large crowds a bit daunting. Their largest audience has been over 1,500: “a little big for us” she said.

They are looking forward to visiting Adelaide again as it is a lovely city, friendly with excellent scones.

You can catch Mourne and her sisters in A Very Kransky Christmas playing at the Space Theatre from 8 – 10 Dec at 7.30pm with a matinee on the 10th at 2.30pm. Tickets are $34.90 – $44.90 and can be booked via the Adelaide Festival Centre website.
