On her way to perform at her Canberra show, Elizabeth Rose took some time to talk with Music Editor Darren Hassan about her new self titled EP and current tour, which includes the opening night of Pirie and Co, Adelaide’s newest live music venue.
Pleasant, earthy and youthful, Elizabeth Rose is an up and coming star in the electronica scene that has gained quite a following after her first release Crystallise. Rose is rapidly making her name as an accomplished producer/singer/songwriter, and her new album released in January entitled ‘Elizabeth Rose’ shows why she is becoming so popular.
Having played to a sellout crowds already, Elizabeth is on the road about to play in Canberra when we speak prior to her heading to Adelaide to launch Pirie and Co.
According to Rose, the audience can expect from her shows “fun costumes, colorful visuals and, I will be playing all of the new stuff from the Elizabeth Rose EP as well as some of my older stuff from Crystallise.”
The new EP is quite sharp and has a sophisticated ambience, and the track ‘Out of Step’ was reminiscent of D Mob & Cathy Dennis from the 1990’s. When I inform Rose of this, she readily accepts this as a ‘cool’ thing and vows to check them out for comparison. A very humble approach to her house/DJ forebears!
The totally cool video clip for ‘Sensibility’ features what appears to be vintage VHS recorded grabs from assorted film clips, which Rose says came out of thin air. “I wanted to come up with something that looked like it came from that era, that looked like it was videotaped. The Director shot the whole clip on Green Screen with the extra clips and then re-taped it through a VCR to get the exact effect of a VCR recording. I’m not sure where the Director got the clips from, but they’re great and were well-chosen!”

In understanding why Elizabeth Rose is attracted to this genre of music, she replies with “definitely the vocal melodies, it’s what I loved about the early 2000’s R & B that I grew up listening to, as well as the production side with Destiny’s Child and Missy Elliott coming to mind as production side influences”.
Given that Elizabeth Rose is both a recording artist as well as a live performer, I ask her what differences she sees between both performance mediums.
“ Being in a studio can be quite bland at times, yes it’s great in that it gives you time to develop a good idea but it can be a little boring at times when fresh ideas aren’t forthcoming, but I find motivation in listening to other artists that I like for inspiration & excitement. Recording and performing live are of course, two different worlds,” says Rose.
Rose cites Bjork and Radiohead as influences, and stipulates that they are “both different and unique from mainstream artists in their approach to songwriting and structure, it comes across as intelligent music- I’m a huge fan of them both!”
As she’s travelling to a show as we are speaking via phone, I shoot one final ‘personal’ question hoping to garner a confession of sinister proportions. Luckily for fans yet unfortunate for myself, here’s a bit of inside information from Rose herself that you didn’t know before. In her own words, she’s a “bit of a Tomboy and likes to go fishing!” Hardly shocking nor surprising, as Elizabeth Rose is a down to earth young performer who seems less interested in anything other than ‘the music’. Ah, the simplicity of youth. Long may it last!
