Production house Strut & Fret have produced many a popular Fringe show, and are set to bring their new one Cult to the Garden of Unearthly Delights, this year.

The show combines clips from cult movies, with live performances, all in a late-night, cabaret setting.

We spoke to producer/director Geoffrey Masters just prior to the show’s opening.

“With this show, I’m trying to relive my childhood a little bit on stage. I drew a lot of inspiration from old Steven King films, Stanley Kubrick films, Hitchcock and cult movies like Ghostbusters and Barbarella. So the show is part video-projection and part performance. Some of the live performance is true to the original and some goes a little bit left-of-centre!”

The concept was originally developed through a commission from the Melbourne Fringe, but Masters has added further elements for the Adelaide incarnation.

“I’ve added more circus elements this year, because we are performing in Umbrella Revolution, so that environment gives us the option to do more stuff like that.”

Cult will also feature guest artists from the Fringe on a rotating roster, so each night will be different.

“For instance we have one performer who is going to do something from Hitchcock’s The Birds and another who wants to do a drag-queen Fight Club.

Using a cabaret setting allows Masters to have his performers work in and around the audience, creating a chaotic, surprising and immersive show, although he reassures potential patrons ‘there’s nothing to be scared of!’

This is the perfect show to round-out a night of Fringing, giving audiences somewhere to go for a late-night drink, whilst still being highly entertained.
