House of Sand Arts Company Includes Adelaide In 2018 Program

Today House of Sand – one of Australia’s most exciting new arts companies has announced its 2018 program, which sees it bring award-winning dance, theatre, and multi-artform productions to Adelaide for the first time.

Since its inception in 2015 co-artistic directors and siblings, Charles Sanders and Eliza Sanders have been cooking up innovative theatrical concoctions. This includes a double bill of contemporary performance works, which have toured the east coast and New Zealand and brought the company substantial critical and popular acclaim, and accolades including the Wellington Fringe Festival Most Promising Emerging Company award, and a nomination for Best in Fringe at that same festival. During this time they have worked with around 30 collaborators in two countries and five cities, and partnering with six venues to present at five festivals.

Now House Of Sand’s 2018 program is coming to Adelaide. One of the highlights of the program is Stephen Sewell’s forgotten masterwork, Welcome The Bright World, which returns to the stage after over 35 years as part of State Theatre Company South Australia’s 2018 season. Through State Umbrella the company selects one independent theatre production each year for special attention and support. This will see a combination of House of Sand’s signature subversive and visceral style to a (massive and) canonical text. Welcome The Bright World is set in 1980 in West Berlin. Max (a mathematician) and Sebastian (a physicist) are looking for ‘Truth’ — that whimsically named quark being sought to complete the picture of the physical world. But as we know all too well the truth is flexible. As Max and Sebastian’s increasingly obsessive pursuit draws in their family and friends their path heads more and more inexorably towards a frightening collision with the power of the state.

House of Sand’s flagship contemporary performance works Pedal and Castles chart two halves of an archetypal journey of discovery… in a completely a-typical way. Castles is the winner of two NZ Fringe awards including Most Promising Emerging Company and nominated for four including Outstanding Performer and Best In Fringe.

Emerging star of the cross-artform stage Eliza Sanders brings all her artistic skills to the table, text, movement, her physically virtuosic dance, visual art influences, and song. Like an absurd stream-of-consciousness writing, Eliza finds a-logical, illogical and semi-logical connections between ideas and memories— a hive of strangely interconnected questions and musings — from the silly to the sublime.

Co-Artistic Directors Charles Sanders & Eliza Sanders said they were excited to bring the House Of Sand 2018 Program to Adelaide.

“Up until now circumstances and opportunities around the country have meant that House of Sand haven’t had the pleasure of playing for Adelaide, and Adelaide hasn’t had the chance to experience our particular brand of theatrical pandemonium. That’s about to change…”

The final show of the program is Alice Birch’s hilarious post-feminist tract Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again. Alice Birch skewers the language and semiotics of both patriarchy and feminism in a play, which is equal parts belly laugh funny and gut-wrenchingly real. Women take their rightful place, center stage: becoming the aggressor in seductions, demanding what they want from work, and trashing supermarkets and with them the fragile masculine ego.

After premiering at Sydney’s Old 505 Theatre, ‘Revolt’ will come screaming into Adelaide just in time for Feast 2018, to revolutionise how you see feminism and theatre.
