Horrible Bosses

Rating: MA 15+
Running time: 98 minutes
Release date: 25 August 2011

Nick (Jason Bateman) after working incredibly long hours on the promise of a promotion by his miserly boss, Dave Harken (Kevin Spacey) finds out he has been duped. His dental assistant friend, Dale (Charlie Day) is being sexually harassed and blackmailed by dentist, Dr Julia Harris (Jennifer Aniston). Kurt ‘s (Jason Sudeikis) boss (Donald Sutherland) dies and his debauched power hungry son Bobby (Colin Farrell) takes over control of the company.

Directed by Seth Gordon (episodes of Modern Family and The Office) this film comes on the wave of several male buddy comedies where they bond over alcohol and sex (think The Hangover). There are some crude scenes as you can imagine with three guys involved but all very funny and unexpectedly good.

Bateman seems to be the comedian of the month with his recent appearance in the hilarious The Catch Up along with Jason Sudeikis who is also doing the rounds with the movie studios current obsession with the latest genre of male bonding comedies. Sudeikis most recent films, released earlier this year, include Hall Pass and Going the Distance the latter of which also starred Charlie Day (Always Sunny in Philadelphia). So all three, in demand and seasoned comics put in a good performance, and are well supported by a funny and clever script by a consortium of writers. Farrell is deliciously wicked as the evil son and manages to lose his cute factor which makes his part more believable. Foxx, Spacey and Aniston also put in solid supporting performances and though the characters may be over the top you’re too busy laughing to notice. It’s relatable too as we can all identify with inept or incompetent bosses which makes for great laugh.
